WHY?
Waterborne illnesses, such as typhoid, cholera, and chronic diarrhea, are the cause of more than half of the deaths in Haiti every year. Contaminated water is also one of the leading causes of childhood illness and the very high infant death rate in Haiti.WHAT?
HAPI hosts Clean Water teams who provide hollow membrane water filters that are distributed to the moms in our Start Right program and other vulnerable persons. The filters are lightweight and easy to maintain. We purchase buckets locally and our Community Health Director works with the team to educate local families on clean water and proper sanitation at a seminar. They follow up with home visits to ensure the system is properly installed and maintained. Local persons have said that the water filter is like “having a doctor in the house” because the filter reduces illness and medical bills!

The hollow membrane filters are not available in-country. Due to civil unrest and COVID travel restrictions, this program is temporarily discontinued. We hope to reopen in 2022. Interested? Contact us.
